Cleaning Silver Jewellery

All metals react with oxygen in the air. Silver however, seems to react faster and can fairly quickly turn black in colour. This process is called oxidisation – some people pay for this!

If your favourite piece of jewellery turns black, there are several ways you can bring it back to it’s natural shine.

We have a range of dips, foams and cloths online and in store that are available for purchase, or if you don’t have the time, we can do it all for you for a small, hassle-free fee.

Ultrasonic Cleaning

Everyday products such as soaps and hand sanitizers can leave residue on your precious gems, causing them to look ‘cloudy’. These can usually be easily restored to their original sparkle by taking a soak in our ultrasonic cleaner.

This specialized piece of equipment uses high frequency waves to shake loose any dirt that accumulates under your gems, allowing light to enter the stone and create the spectacular sparkle once more.

Most gemstones such as diamonds and sapphires are suitable for ultrasonic cleaning, however not all are. Our knowledgeable team will advise you of this in-store.

No appointment needed – usually completed the same day.

Rhodium Plating

All white gold is rhodium plated. Gold is a naturally yellow metal and so once mixed with different alloys, it becomes a grey metal.

To give it the bright white shiny finish we all know and love, it is then plated in rhodium. As a plating, rhodium does eventually wear off. This can be prolonged by not being worn in the shower, avoiding cosmetic products and not being worn in bed however, you may find that you want to restore it to its original shine.

This is a very easy process where we send your jewellery to our Master Jewellers who will quote to rhodium plate your jewellery.

Buffing

Certain pieces of jewellery such as rings and bangles often get small superficial scratches due to their constant contact with other surfaces.

Make your jewellery feel brand new again with a professional buff, bringing your jewellery back to it’s perfect shine. This service is completed in our Alexandra store and therefore can take a few days if picking up from our Queenstown store.

Re-Plating

Gold plated jewellery also has the inevitable effect that eventually its plating will wear off.

Like rhodium plating, this can be prolonged by avoiding cosmetic products and not being worn in the shower or in bed, but should you find that the plating is wearing off we can send it to one of our reputable suppliers who specialise in gold plating jewellery.

Watch Refinishing

We want you to wear and enjoy your favourite watches. That’s why we understand that from time to time, the outer case of your watch may start to get a little scratched.

Our experienced watchmakers will have your watch looking good as new and it will be back on your wrist in no time!

Stone Refinishing

Precious gemstones are exactly that – precious.
We want you to love and wear your jewellery at every opportunity, however some stones are more prone to scratching and damage.

Each stone is different – some can be repolished or recut to remove those unwanted superficial blemishes. For larger/deeper damage that is unrepairable, we also offer a stone replacement service. Pop and see us in store and speak to our friendly team for more advice.

Checking the Security of your Jewellery

The claws that hold your precious gems in place can eventually become thin and weak, and left unnoticed, can cause a stone to come loose, or even fall out.

To prevent this, we recommend bringing in your jewellery at least once a year just to be checked over by our friendly staff. They will use a loupe to closely check on your claws and settings and will advise if your jewellery needs any repair maintenance.

This is a service that is completely free of charge and only takes a few minutes of your time.

Ring Resizing

Whether you’ve just purchased the perfect ring from us, or you’ve decided to change the finger you wear your ring on, often, rings need to be resized.

We work alongside numerous Master Jewellers, some of which, have been in the trade for over 50 years! We always get a quote first, to make sure you don’t get any nasty surprises!

Bring your ring in to one of our stores and we will ensure that not only will your ring fit perfectly, but it will look like new on return.

Replating Jewellery

Gold plated jewellery unfortunately, does wear with time. It can be preserved by not being worn in the shower and being careful of cosmetic products such as perfume, however, the beautiful gold sheen will eventually fade.

Not to worry though, we use reputable companies who specialise in gold plating that can bring your jewellery back to it’s original shine!

Another plating service that we provide is rhodium plating. All white gold jewellery is rhodium plated to give it a bright white shine. Like all other plating, this does eventually fade, but can be re-rhodium plated at any time by our Master Jewellers.

Small Repairs & Adjustments

We all have to remember that jewellery is made from precious metals like silver and gold – metals that are relatively soft. It can be very easy to catch and break any part of your special piece.

That’s why we keep small findings such as clasps and jump rings handy in store for when you need them. We also keep in a range of butterflies as we know these can be hard to hang on to! These can all be fitted in store most of the time, whilst you wait or shop!

Re-joining Jewellery

Again, silver and gold are soft metals and so can easily be broken.

We can re-join broken chains in-store using jump rings or if you need the extra stability of a solder, we can send it away to our highly skilled Master Jewellers where no job is too big.

Repairing Pearl Jewellery

We are lucky enough to have an in-house pearl jewellery repairer, meaning you can leave your strands of pearls with us for a few days and we can give them a new lease of life! There’s options for different thread material and even how it is re-threaded.

Jewellery that is often glued to a post (pearl earrings) can eventually become unstuck. Not to worry though, we work closely alongside a specialist pearl supplier who have their own workshop and can have your precious earrings back to you in no time!

Re-modelling Jewellery & Custom Design

Have some old jewellery that’s a little dated? Or fallen out of love with your favourite piece?

Jewellery is made to be worn, and if you find your jewellery lying in your jewellery case, it may be time to have it remodelled.

We offer in-store custom design and advice and can sit down with you and prepare a design that you will love. Using the latest CAD software you can modify any aspect of your design in minutes. We then send your design to our Master jewellers for them to create your masterpiece.

Designs and products quoted at consultation.

Most battery replacements can be done in-store, while you wait or whilst you do your shopping!

There’s no need to make an appointment, just pop in and we will have your watch back to you as fast as possible!

Watch Straps & Bracelets

We have a large range of watch straps in-store to suit any watch or style. All our watch straps can be fitted to your watch free of charge, in-store and while you wait.

Full Watch Service

Sometimes your watch needs servicing, just like a car engine. If your watch stops or loses/gains time and needs a service, we will send it away to our fully qualified watch makers to give you a quote of any work that needs doing.

A full service includes a full overhaul of the movement of your watch. Our watchmakers will replace all necessary minor parts inside the watch, lubricate any parts that have become slow or stopped moving and give you a 1 year guarantee on any work they carry out.

Small Repairs & Adjustments

Pins are the backbone that keep your watch securely on your wrist. Pins often wear and can cause the watch to detach from the band or come apart. We can replace pins and spring bars in-store and ensure the safety of your favourite watch.

Adjustments are also a service we provide in-store whilst you wait. If the metal strap on your watch (old or new) is too big, we can adjust the strap to make it fit your wrist perfectly.

Watch Glass Replacement

A chipped or cracked glass can cause tiny shards to get caught on the dial which in turn could cause your hands to get stuck. This can often lead to of damage to the internal workings of the watch leading to rust with limited repair options.

To prevent this, bring your watch in as soon as you can so we can send it away to our highly skilled watch makers who will give us a quote to replace your damaged glass.

Dial Repairs

The tiny little hands on your watch that tell you the time are a very delicate part of the movement. They are so carefully balanced in place that even a small knock can cause them to come loose. When they become loose in the dial, they can cause issues with time-keeping which can lead to damage of the movement.

Get ahead of this by bringing your watch in so we can send it away to our highly skilled watchmakers who will give us a quote to rebalance the hands or repair the dial.

Pressure Testing

Most watches have some degree of water resistance. If you use your watch in water for activities such as swimming and your watch has a resistance rating of 50m or above, it would be advisable to have your watch pressure tested after battery replacement or anytime you have the back off the watch to ensure you can continue to use it for your favourite water activities. This can be done in our Alexandra store for any watches up to 100m water resistance or will just take a few short days from our Queenstown store.

Please note, NO watches should be used in the shower as the steam can cause damage to the seals and lead to your watch letting in moisture.
