How to Clean and Care for Your Jewellery

As much as we would love to tell you that your jewellery will stay pristine forever, unfortunately that is not the case. There are however, several ways you can keep it looking shiny and sparkly!

SILVER JEWELLERY

Silver Dip

Silver dip is great for almost instant results. Silver reacts with the oxygen in the air and often turns black.

Things like chains on necklaces can be tricky to clean inside the links and make them super shiny again. That’s where silver dip comes in… simple to use and fast results.

Simply pop your jewellery into the dip tray, lower into the solution and agitate for approximately 15 seconds and remove. The important thing to remember when using silver dip is that it will leave a residue on the jewellery, so make sure that you rinse your jewellery thoroughly with clean water and dry carefully.

You can purchase silver dip here or in-store or leave your jewellery with us for a same day service!

SILVER JEWELLERY

Silver Foam

Silver foam is similar to silver dip in that it is simple to use and provides fast results, however it is used slightly differently. Simply put a small amount of foam on the sponge provided and wet the sponge to create the foaming solution.

This solution can then be applied to silver jewellery and used like a scrub. Again, this can leave a residue on your jewellery, so be sure to rinse and dry thoroughly after use.

Available for purchase online or in-store.

STONESET JEWELLERY

Ultrasonic Cleaner / In-store

Everyday products such as soaps and hand sanitizers can leave residue on your precious gems, causing them to look ‘cloudy’. These can usually be easily restored to their original sparkle by taking a soak in our ultrasonic cleaner.

This specialized piece of equipment uses high frequency waves to shake loose any dirt that accumulates under your gems, all owing light to enter the stone and create the spectacular sparkle once more. Most gemstones such as diamonds and sapphires are suitable for ultrasonic cleaning, however not all are. Our knowledgeable team will advise you of this in-store.

No appointment needed – usually completed the same day.

SILVER & GOLD JEWELLERY

Polishing Cloths

Polishing cloths are great for sprucing up almost all jewellery. They are impregnated with a polish specific to either gold or silver or a generic polish for both and all varieties can be purchased in-store or online. The cloths turn black as the polish is released from the cloth so don’t worry – it is meant to look like that!

The thing to remember is not to wash your polishing cloth – doing so will remove the polish from the cloth and make it useless!.

STONESET JEWELLERY

DIY at Home

If for any reason, you are unable to come and see us in-store or you have gemstones that are not suitable for an ultrasonic cleaner, don’t panic! There are ways you can clean your precious gems at home.

There are several wives tales about using different household products or even gin (we think you shouldn’t waste it!) but honestly and truthfully, the best solution for cleaning gems at home is warm soapy water and a very soft toothbrush. The soapy water is gentle enough not to damage any stones and just gently pushing the soft toothbrush underneath the gems will release any dirt being held captive.

PEARL JEWELLERY

Keeping the Sheen

Pearls are more delicate than other gemstones or metals and so extra care needs to be taken when cleaning pearl jewellery.

For example, the chemicals in polish are harmful to the outer layer of pearls and can damage their look.

Be sure to only clean pearls with a soft cloth, free from any chemicals.
